When the tunnel was finally complete, it was the train and motor vehicles that brought visitors to the valley primarily for summer vacations. But it was the decision to keep Berthoud Pass open in the winters that would forever change this area. In 1940, Winter Park Ski Resort opened and the economic mainstay of this community, tourism, was born. Today, the Fraser Valley is filled with working ranches and several small communities, such as Winter Park, Fraser, Granby and Grand Lake. Almost 2,000 people call Winter Park and the Fraser Valley home. This down-to-earth community, just 67 miles from Denver, is friendly and unpretentious and that's just part of its charm. But while the community may not put on airs, the local scenery does. Grand County is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and is home to three wilderness areas, making this area a huge recreational playground. This is the great outdoors you've dreamed about. With an average of 359 inches of snowfall per year at Winter Park Resort and more than 600 miles of marked trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, we're a powder paradise for winter sports enthusiasts of all abilities. In the summer, that fantastic trail system turns into a mountain bikers dream. It's no wonder we're referred to as Mountain Bike Capital USA(tm). But summer is not just for pedal pushers. Outdoor enthusiasts come out en force to enjoy our region's lush forests, crystal streams and bright blue skies. Yampa Valley Film Board and NW Colorado Film Commission Molly Killien P.O.
